Setting goals has always been a necessity for success.
Simply put, I am eager to learn and am willing to do
whatever it takes to become the best possible clinician.
I am currently an active member of the Academy of General
Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic
Dentistry; in addition to the ADA, ISDS (state branch),
and CDS (local branch).  I plan on gaining Fellowship
status with the Academy of General Dentistry, and
becoming an accredited member of the American
Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.  Both programs are
extremely rigorous and will take between 2-5 years
to complete (written and oral exams in addition to
actual patient cases submitted while practicing dentistry).
What does this mean?  Well, in addition to the 500+ hours
of continued education required, it essentially will mean
I have committed myself to absolute excellence in
functional and esthetic treatment through continued
education and peer reviewed patient experience.  My plan
is to complete these goals within 5-7 years.  It’ll be
difficult, but I’m up for the challenge.

Fortunately, this addiction doesn’t need intervention, just a little direction.  As you may or may not know, I’ve already completed 19 hours of education since graduation and am on pace for 79 more hours bringing me to a total of approximately 100 CE hours for this calendar year.  Keep in mind I graduated in May, so that’s pace for 100 CE hours a year (We are required by the state to have a minimum of 16 hours a year)!  If it’s not obvious by now, “next level” dentistry is my theme here.  What I may lack in years of experience, I certainly make up for in desire to learn how to diagnose and treat advanced restorative and esthetic cases.  That being said, I’m excited to bring my dentistry to the next level and deliver outstanding restorative and esthetic treatment to every one of my patients!

Most of you may not know what The Dawson Academy is.  Those in the dental field will tell you that it’s an outstanding series of courses intended to bring general practitioners to the next level of dentistry.  I am lucky enough to be involved with a group practice that encourages the participation in these courses.  Being that I’m already turning into a continuing education junkie, I’ve already registered for four of the eight courses Dawson teaches.  The first occlusion course, which is similar to the occlusion course I took in the summer, is taking place in St. Petersburg, Florida where I will meet up with an ortho friend of mine.  I will continue to take these advanced courses throughout the year when offered until I have completed the entire series.  Even then, I might be inclined to sit in on courses which have already been completed so that I have absolute confidence in the material in each course.  You can imagine my commitment to my patients moving forward; I will strive to be the best clinician possible, whether it’s advanced aesthetics or simply taking you out of pain!

I’m not sure I have many (or any) followers just yet; regardless it’s been a while since I’ve last updated the blog and I figured I’d knock off some of the dust.  It’s been an extremely interesting ride thus far and every day seems to get more exciting.  For those of you that follow, my new position at Manus has been wonderful.  The doctors and specialists there continue to blow me away with their work, charisma, and dedication to their practice and their patients.  I couldn’t ask for better mentors.  I’ve recently been taken under the wings of our general clinics manager Dr. Robin Gay and Manus’s periodontist, the notorious Dr. Robert Pick.  Dr. Pick is an extremely successful Periodontist and is consistently rated as a Top 25 doctor in the state of Illinois.

Other doctors in which I am closely involved with are Dr. Teo, Dr. Dunning, Dr. Rudolph, and Dr. Christensen.  All of which have many years of clinical experience, wonderful insight, and outstanding reputations.  If you can’t tell I’m excited by now, I’m not sure what else to tell you!

I aim to continue to post about personal and professional experiences (hopefully on a more regular basis) so stay tuned for some aesthetic cases, patient involvement, and most likely stuff to do with fishing…..

Dentists have hobbies too you know.  This was my last outing of the season at Lake Geneva.  Could you believe 80 degrees and a sunburn in October?  Fishing was tough as it usually is with beautiful weather, but it was great to get out.  As everyone else knows it’s important to balance work with play.  Outside the field that I love, is occupied with seasonal sports and time with friends.  But ask my wife and my brother if there was one place I’d like to be, it’s on a bass boat in open water!  What’s everyone else like to do?

There’s no possible way I could relate the two other than the fact that I’m a dentist and I’m addicted to Fantasy Football.  It’s funny because when I hear my wife talking to her friends about how ridiculous the idea is; she suddenly realizes she’s not the only one who watches me check player updates and stats while watching football on Sundays.  This type of proactive engagement falls under the same categories as guys playing video games, but that’s a story for another day.  I try to do most of my football matchup analysis when Tina is busy so that I’m not sarcastically reminded how I’m attempting to build a team of elite athletes purely from stats on paper.  I’ll usually rebuttal with some sort of women’s designer clothing example, shopping sprees, or many of things men are baffled by.  Let’s just call it a draw and chalk it up to guys being guys, eh?  As for the guys, it’s only week 6 and we’re entering must-win games.  Hit the waiver wire, follow your instincts, and lead them to the 2011 playoffs to solidify your bragging rights for Fantasy Football 2012 and beyond.
